How to crack PSU interviews after GATE?
Today we have with us Anas Feroz who got AIR-6 in ESE 2015 and he has some points to share with you all. This post will be helpful for those who have already cracked the GATE exam and now eagerly waiting for the PSU interviews. Many of you might already have got call from prestigious PSUs and those who have not should not lose heart as they may get a chance in second list. So let us hear from the man himself what he has to say about PSU interviews.
I got selected in BARC, PGCIL, HPCL, IOCL , NTPC, DMRC and ONGC , thanks for the reason that I didn’t give up on my ESE preparation. Most of the interview questions were from the conventional questions I was practicing.
Considering the fact that you have been called for PSU interviews, I’m assuming that you have a good command over technical topics from your gate preparation.
Now what extra is required is to go through the theory because all PSUs will ask you theory questions in the interview. Now if you’re preparing for ESE your theory part will be taken care of automatically. You also need to go through the PSU website and jot down some important projects , board members name and CSR projects, etc that might help you in the introduction part. But do not overstress this part and give it only 1 hour before the day of the interview. Also you can save the time on the interview day by taking your notes copy or the company notes and reading them there itself.
I’ll highlight some important points regarding some companies.
Prepare 5 topics as they’ll ask you to name 5 of your favorite subjects, in the order of your competency.
The questions are specifically the same as we practice in conventional for ESE. I got delighted when they asked me to draw circuits and waveforms. They’ll start from the very basics and then increase there level of questions. Don’t worry if you’re not able to answer them. Just focus on your approach. Give them some hint or direction as to how the question can be tackled. I was able to answer 60% of the questions and got selected. If you’re interview is lasting for more than 45 minutes then you’re in their good books.
Since I am from electrical background I will highlight some topics from which the questions can be expected.
Power system Protection.
Electrical engineering basics.
Advantages of Grid system.
Smart grid basics.
The name says it all, National thermal power corporation. Learn about thermal power plants. Learn
about the different components of a thermal power plant. Also refer the efficiency of different
components. The process starts with a group discussion followed by a Personal Interview.
Interview process consists of a GD followed by a Personal interview. Some questions for the interview:
Power system Protection.
Learn about the refineries and their location. Don’t forget to remember the first or the oldest one as it
will make the introduction about the company sound better. Go through the PSU’s website and find
whatever technical projects you can find. If you’re BTP is in the same topic you can talk about it. Also, read about their CSR activities.
The process consists of a group task followed by a group discussion and then a Personal Interview. Group task and group discussion take around 10 minutes to complete. Some important questions are-
Efficiency of boiler.
Voltage control mechanisms.
Oldest refinery of IOCL.
Role of Coaching in the preparation of Gate.
The selection process of HPCL is quite different from other PSUs because HPCL selects a candidate
purely on the basis of interview. This means that you’re GATE score will not play any role in selection. The selection is purely on how your interview went.
Some questions are
- Why do you want to join an oil company being from electrical background. Why not join Power Grid?
- Role of an electrical engineer in an oil company.
- Umbrella pact between Germany and India.
- CSR activities of HPCL.
- If you have to switch on the AC without moving to the AC switch, what would you do?
You can expect questions on posting locations in ONGC. As the main work in ONGC is drilling oil, hence the posting locations are not that good. They may ask you why to choose ONGC and not other PSU’s. Not many technical questions will be asked. Read about smart grid.
Also go through Electrical engineering interview questions and answers . You can read 1 to chapters
daily during lunch or dinner.
All the best for your interviews.
Hope you are benefited by the experiences of Mr. Anas Feroz and I wish you best of luck for all your future endeavors. Please share this post with your friends and colleagues so that they can also get a handsome package in topmost PSUs.
