SSC-CGL 2016 Topper Interview – AIR 11 – Abhinav Gupta

Hey, I am Abhinav Gupta. I got AIR 11 in SSC-CGL Exam 2016 and got the post of Income Tax Inspector. It was my first attempt. I did my graduation from Rajasthan University and is a commerce Graduate. Currently, I am waiting for my joining and also working as an educator with a reputed institute.

 Exam specific questions

  1. How was SSC-CGL paper this year? Give us some insights into SSC-CGL-2017 paper and compare it to past year question paper.

I didn’t appear this year. But after due analysis, I can say SSC-CGL 2017 (Pre) exam was almost the same as 2016 (Pre) exam. It was of easy to moderate level. The question asked were generally basic and all that was needed was time management to secure good marks.

  1. How did you feel after seeing first few questions? Did you feel relaxed and calm or you were anxious during first few questions? If you felt anxious then how did you calm yourself?

Since Tier 1 of SSC CGL 2016 exam was my first competitive exam, I was very much worried about it. I knew that marks of Tier 1 play crucial role in deciding overall rank but the reviews of previous shifts eased my nerves. After seeing first few questions I was on cloud nine because the paper was easier than my expectations but still I controlled my emotions and started solving the questions.

  1. How did you go about attempting the paper? How did you distribute time among various sections? Please give a detailed description of time management strategy you followed?

My approach for the exam was to attempt most no. of questions in the first 20 minutes. Since Tier 1 of 2016 was of 75 minutes I didn’t face a time crunch situation. But for 60 minutes exam, my strategy is very clear. I will give 5 minutes to GS, 12 minutes to English, 15 minutes to Reasoning and 23 minutes to Mathematics, Remaining 5 minutes for review. I used to attempt Reasoning first then GS then English and Mathematics at the end.

Preparation Strategy

  1. What was the motive behind you appearing for SSC-CGL exam?

I always wanted to join Income Tax department and it was my sole motive to take this exam.

  1. When did you start preparing for SSC-CGL exam?

I started my preparation in tits bits in November 2015. But my full-fledged preparation (say 6 hours daily) started in May 2016.

  1. Up to what date were you able to complete the course once? What was your target as to how many questions to practice in each section? What was the sequence in which you prepared the sections?

I never did course wise preparation. But still, I completed my course once until July 2016 of English and Mathematics. I used to practice 60 questions daily of Mathematics and English and 50 questions each of GS and Reasoning. I first completed my Advance Mathematics portion and Grammar portion of English and I did GS mostly in the later part of the August 2016.

  1. Which sections according to require more practice than the others and why?

Each and every section requires practice but Mathematics and GS require the most practice. Maths, as you all know, is all about practice. But I said GS because doing a lot of objective questions is the best way of retaining facts and figures.

  1. Which study material and standard books would you recommend for SSC-CGL Aspirants in each section?

Maths – Advance Maths by Rakesh Yadav and Kiran Publications

English – SP Bakshi and Plinth to Paramount

GS- A book by Made Easy and Lucent

Reasoning – R.S. Aggarwal

  1. How did you keep the subjects fresh in your memory the entire time? Did you revise the subjects regularly or you left the revision for last few months? What was your strategy for revision in the last few months?

I never did regular revision. I kept revision for the last few months and then during revision, I used to revise all the questions bookmarked by me. I also had a habit of notes making. That helped me a lot in revisions.

  1. What is the role of mock tests in your success in SSC-CGL exam? How many mock tests did you attempt? When did you start attempting mock tests?

Half the reason for my success is mock tests. I gave at least 20-25 mock test for the Tier-1 exam. I got to know the importance of mocks very late and that is why I started attempting mocks from mid of August only.

  1. How was your score in Mock Tests? Is there any correlation between mock test performance and actual SSC-CGL performance?

Actually, the mock I opted for the Tier 1 exam was humongously tough and that’s why I never ever scored well in the mocks. But my percentile was always good and that always boosted my confidence. I think mocks matters a lot but the marks of mocks are not much relevant for the main exam.

Personal Questions

  1. How did you motivate yourself for such a long journey towards SSC-CGL?

My journey was not that long and also, I was very much busy with my CA course and that is why I never felt the need for motivation. But still, for motivation I kept all my walls deluged with all kind of thoughts and also, I used to read a lot of books for the same.

  1. Did you expect such a result after giving the SSC-CGL exam?

After Prelims, I was sure that I will score fairly good but never expected that I will get 180 marks. Those 180 marks worked as an impetus and helped me crack this exam.

  1. How did you feel the moment you saw the results?

To be honest, the result did not excite me much because my excitement had already taken place just after the release of the answer key. The only thing that the result ensured was the rank I was going secure.

  1. What is the role of family and friends in your success in SSC-CGL exam?

My whole success is attributed to my family and friends. My family never pressurized me and never interfered with my studies. They only helped me by doing all the things I asked them. They also kept me motivated by telling me that I can do this and I will do this.

  1. Who would you dedicate this SSC-CGL result to?

To my whole family but if I have to dedicate this success to a particular person then surely my father.

  1. What is the success mantra that you would like to give to other SSC-CGL aspirants which has been critical for your preparation as well?

Any job, any exam is only a part of your life, it is not your full life. Life is bigger than all these things. So study hard and enjoy even harder.
